New York is tied for first place in a global ranking of the most expensive cities in the world, and half of working-age households in the city can’t afford to live here. Nowhere is the high cost of living more apparent than in the city’s housing market, where an affordability crisis has resulted in record high rents, record low vacancies, and a severe shortage in housing — pricing many New Yorkers out of the city. 

To help address the housing shortage and affordability crisis, 5BORO is exploring innovative solutions to add more housing — and more affordable housing — to the city. This includes advocating for legislative reforms and finding opportunities to build more housing in underutilized office buildings.
