Mental Health

About the issue

There is near universal consensus that the mental healthcare system is broken in the nation, including in NYC. A quarter of New Yorkers have a diagnosed behavioral health condition, and 5% face severe psychological distress in a typical year. Over 40% of adult New Yorkers with a serious mental illness said they needed treatment at some point in the past year but did not receive it or delayed getting it. New York State ranks in the bottom half of states in many key behavioral health metrics, despite spending more per person on behavioral health than nearly any other state.

5BORO is working to advance a more effective mental health care system that provides affordability, accessibility and whole-person care to New Yorkers who need it most.
